    Ultraheavy cosmic ray tracks in meteorites: A reappraisal, based on calibrations with relativistic ions

    Experiments were carried out on tracks of high energy U ions in olivine, a common meteoritic mineral. The results offer an explanation for the lack of success of previous attempts to derive the Ultraheavy Cosmic Ray composition from the study of tracks in meteorites. They also suggest how such experiments should be performed. The methods tested are described and illustrated

    G-300: The first French Getaway Special microgravity measurements of fluid thermal conductivity

    Thermal conductivity measurements on liquids are difficult to perform on Earth because of thermal motions due to convection. In microgravity, the convection due to buoyancy is evanescent, and a strong reduction of Rayleigh and Nusselt numbers can be expected. Three low viscosity liquids are selected to carry out the measurements; distilled water (standard) and two silicone oils. A modified hot plate method with a simplified guard ring is used; the reduction of convective motions permitted the use in the experimental cells of larger interplate distances and/or temperature differences than in Earth measurements, improving the accuracy. Comparisons between Earth and orbit results may help to understand the convection occurrence in the cells. Thermal, vibrational, and EMI tests have proved that the design satisfies the NASA requirements

    Inductive specification and axonal orientation of spinal neurons mediated by divergent bone morphogenetic protein signaling pathways

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)7 evokes both inductive and axon orienting responses in dorsal interneurons (dI neurons) in the developing spinal cord. These events occur sequentially during the development of spinal neurons but in these and other cell types such inductive and acute chemotactic responses occur concurrently, highlighting the requirement for divergent intracellular signaling. Both type I and type II BMP receptor subtypes have been implicated selectively in orienting responses but it remains unclear how, in a given cell, divergence occurs. We have examined the mechanisms by which disparate BMP7 activities are generated in dorsal spinal neurons.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We show that widely different threshold concentrations of BMP7 are required to elicit the divergent inductive and axon orienting responses. Type I BMP receptor kinase activity is required for activation of pSmad signaling and induction of dI character by BMP7, a high threshold response. In contrast, neither type I BMP receptor kinase activity nor Smad1/5/8 phosphorylation is involved in the low threshold orienting responses of dI axons to BMP7. Instead, BMP7-evoked axonal repulsion and growth cone collapse are dependent on phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) activation, plausibly through type II receptor signaling. BMP7 stimulates PI3K-dependent signaling in dI neurons. BMP6, which evokes neural induction but does not have orienting activity, activates Smad signaling but does not stimulate PI3K.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Divergent signaling through pSmad-dependent and PI3K-dependent (Smad-independent) mechanisms mediates the inductive and orienting responses of dI neurons to BMP7. A model is proposed whereby selective engagement of BMP receptor subunits underlies choice of signaling pathway.</p

    Identifying grain quality for maximum economic returns

    Non-Peer ReviewedAccurate and precise measurements of grain quality are required throughout the wheat production and marketing chain to insure that quality standards are maintained. One of most important uses of quality prediction tests is in the selection of high quality cultivars in plant breeding programs. Environmental factors have a large influence on grain protein concentration (PC) and there is normally a strong negative correlation between PC and cultivar grain yield potential. Because of this relationship and the large influence that flour PC has on other grain quality prediction tests, it is important that we avoid the trap of selecting and growing only cultivars with low grain yield potential in the name of maintaining grain quality standards. In the present study, spring and winter wheat cultivars representing a wide range of grain quality types and PC were grown in dryland and irrigated nitrogen fertilizer trials in western Canada to assess the effectiveness of accepted grain quality selection methods. PC was shown to have a large influence on all grain quality prediction tests considered. A nonlinear relationship between PC and Farinograph strength measurements was of special note. These studies demonstrated that, because environment has a large and variable influence on PC, it is important that cultivar selection procedures include grain quality comparisons that are made over a wide range of PC. This allows for a more accurate assessment of cultivar genetic potential and, when combined with the ability to segregate on the basis of grain PC at the time of producer delivery, provides the opportunity for much greater flexibility in cultivar release programs and improved quality control in grain handling systems

    Statistically derived contributions of diverse human influences to twentieth-century temperature changes

    The warming of the climate system is unequivocal as evidenced by an increase in global temperatures by 0.8 °C over the past century. However, the attribution of the observed warming to human activities remains less clear, particularly because of the apparent slow-down in warming since the late 1990s. Here we analyse radiative forcing and temperature time series with state-of-the-art statistical methods to address this question without climate model simulations. We show that long-term trends in total radiative forcing and temperatures have largely been determined by atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and modulated by other radiative factors. We identify a pronounced increase in the growth rates of both temperatures and radiative forcing around 1960, which marks the onset of sustained global warming. Our analyses also reveal a contribution of human interventions to two periods when global warming slowed down. Our statistical analysis suggests that the reduction in the emissions of ozone-depleting substances under the Montreal Protocol, as well as a reduction in methane emissions, contributed to the lower rate of warming since the 1990s. Furthermore, we identify a contribution from the two world wars and the Great Depression to the documented cooling in the mid-twentieth century, through lower carbon dioxide emissions.     ActRIIA and BMPRII Type II BMP Receptor Subunits Selectively Required for Smad4-Independent BMP7-Evoked Chemotaxis

    Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-evoked reorientation and chemotaxis of cells occurs with rapid onset and involves events local to the cell membrane. The signaling pathways underlying these rapid processes likely diverge from those mediating classical transcriptional responses to BMPs but it remains unclear how BMP receptors are utilized to generate distinct intracellular mechanisms. We show that BMP7-evoked chemotaxis of monocytic cells depends on the activity of canonical type II BMP receptors. Although the three canonical type II BMP receptors are expressed in monocytic cells, inhibition of receptor subunit expression by RNAi reveals that ActRIIA and BMPRII, but not ActRIIB, are each essential for BMP7-evoked chemotaxis but not required individually for BMP-mediated induction. Furthermore, the chemotactic response to BMP7 does not involve canonical Smad4-dependent signaling but acts through PI3K-dependent signaling, illustrating selective activation of distinct intracellular events through differential engagement of receptors. We suggest a model of a BMP receptor complex in which the coordinated activity of ActRIIA and BMPRII receptor subunits selectively mediates the chemotactic response to BMP7

    The scale of predictability

    We introduce a new stylized fact: the hump-shaped behavior of slopes and coefficients of determination as a function of the aggregation horizon when running (forward/backward) predictive regressions of future excess market returns onto past economic uncertainty (as proxied by market variance, consumption variance, or economic policy uncertainty). To justify this finding formally, we propose a novel modeling framework in which predictability is specified as a property of low-frequency components of both excess market returns and economic uncertainty. We dub this property scale-specific predictability. We show that classical predictive systems imply restricted forms of scale-specific predictability. We conclude that for certain predictors, like economic uncertainty, the restrictions imposed by classical predictive systems may be excessively strong

    Generalized nonuniform dichotomies and local stable manifolds

    We establish the existence of local stable manifolds for semiflows generated by nonlinear perturbations of nonautonomous ordinary linear differential equations in Banach spaces, assuming the existence of a general type of nonuniform dichotomy for the evolution operator that contains the nonuniform exponential and polynomial dichotomies as a very particular case. The family of dichotomies considered allow situations for which the classical Lyapunov exponents are zero. Additionally, we give new examples of application of our stable manifold theorem and study the behavior of the dynamics under perturbations.Comment: 18 pages.
